Interested in Joining the Lab?
Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to join the NCI lab!
- You can participate in the NCI lab either as a research volunteer (min. of 4 hrs/week) OR by registering for the course SLHS 5980.

What does it mean to be a part of this research lab?
- New students will be involved in a brief training period by pairing up with experienced lab members.
- You may be involved in collecting on-site data from participants with aphasia and other neurogenic communication disorders.
- You may be involved in a variety of data analysis procedures including conducting transcription of recorded data, discourse analysis, data coding, and statistical analysis.
- Based on your interests, you may be involved in presenting the research work at conferences.
- You can also aim to do an undergraduate or master’s thesis!
In order to participate in the NCI lab, you must complete an online training module from the WMU HSIRB. Follow this link to the IRB Training Module.
- Click on "register" in the upper right hand corner.
- Find "Western Michigan University" in the dropdown box, and then continue to step 2 and so on.
- You need to complete "Group 1 Social and Behavioral Sciences Researchers" which contains 12 modules. It should take approximately 2 hours to complete this training.
- The training completion certificate should be emailed to the lab director at suma.devanga@wmich.edu.
